Purdue University’s Boilers to Mars short film is a groundbreaking initiative designed to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders by showcasing Purdue’s legacy in space exploration. Known as the “Cradle of Astronauts,” Purdue has trained 27 alumni for space travel, including Neil Armstrong and Virgil “Gus” Grissom. This film highlights how Purdue continues to lead in preparing diverse, innovative talent for the challenges of space exploration, including the mission to Mars.
Strategically targeting prospective students on YouTube, a platform underutilized by higher education, Boilers to Mars introduces viewers to the possibilities of a Purdue education in under 10 minutes. The film features a cast inspired by real Purdue students and alumni, representing diverse skill sets in STEM fields like agriculture, engineering, flight technology, and public policy. Authenticity was central to the production, with the Purdue Brand Studio conducting interviews with students and faculty, shooting on location at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, and constructing a physical space shuttle over six months.
The film not only celebrates Purdue’s legacy but also emphasizes its commitment to inclusivity, with clubs and organizations supporting women and minority groups in STEM. Goals included driving video views, increasing traffic to Purdue’s websites, and engaging audiences on social media and campus.
